New York City is the media capital of the world, yet barely 1 out of 10 NYC public schools have a student newspaper. Increasingly, our students are graduating aware of little media beyond social.
Maybe it's because administrators fear their schools are too small or their budgets too thin. Maybe it's because teachers fear the extra workload or unfamiliar curriculum.
Maybe it's because students don't even know that student-journalism is an option, while their parents unwittingly assume that it is.
Students Disrupting understands that the reasons behind this inequity are as diverse as the students they serve, and we also know it's a readily solvable problem.
Our mission is to bring student newspapers to every high school in the city through training, advising, and supporting students, teachers, and administrators, helping them find their voice, deepen their thought, and seek the truth.
